10 Things You Must Not Do When You Are Live On Television

Appearance Matters

When going on live television, it is important to be aware of what you are wearing and how you present yourself. Avoid being overly casual, wearing clothes that are wrinkled or ill-fitting, and aim for a more polished look. Your appearance matters and it is essential that you not neglect it.

Keep Your Cues Organized

A lot of times when you are on live television, you will be given cues on when and how long to talk and when to pay attention to the live audience or other people in the studio. Make sure you are aware of these cues and are prepared to follow them. Do not become flustered or disorganized, as this will be very noticeable on screen.

Be Prepared With a Script or Notes

Having a prepared script or notes of what you intend to say will help keep you on track and ensure that you don’t start rambling or forget what you meant to say. Don’t be afraid to jot down some key points or questions that you may have for other guests or the live audience.

Be Professional

Most television programs have standards for the level of professionalism that must be maintained when on the air. This means being courteous and respectful to everyone involved and not engaging in any unprofessional behavior. This includes avoiding jokes and needlessly arguing with others during a live broadcast.

Listen and Respond Appropriately

Being on live TV requires you to be an active participant and listener. Pay attention to what the other guests and the host are saying and be ready to respond to questions or comments appropriately. Stay focused and don’t be afraid to offer up your input, or move between topics.

Speak Clearly and Precisely

When speaking on live television, you should cut out the “um’s” and “ah’s” as much as possible. Speak with confidence and clarity so that your words can be easily understood. Your audience will appreciate your effort and it may open more doors for you in the future.

Maintain Good Posture

Good posture is important for all public speaking occasions, especially live TV. Sit up straight and avoid fidgeting or appearing too casual. Doing this will ensure that your message is being heard in the way you intended and will make you look more professional.

Speak at an Appropriate Volume

Being too loud will drown out the other guests and a low volume can make it difficult for viewers to hear what you are saying. Aim to find the right balance between being audible and speaking at a suitable volume. Most importantly, don’t be afraid to ask for a microphone check before the broadcast.

Do Not Monopolize the Conversation

When participating in a live TV program, it’s important to not talk over other guests or host. The program should be a balanced conversation with everyone getting an equal opportunity to share their opinions and perspectives. Listen to the other guests and be willing to step back and let them take the lead when necessary.

Avoid Controversial Topics

By default, live television is a platform for expression and self-expression, but that doesn’t mean you should go in with a biased agenda. Avoid discussing any topics that could be considered controversial, as this can quickly turn away viewers. After all, you should aim to inform and entertain the audience, not shock and alienate them.

Do Not Overshare Personal Information

  • Do not reveal anything too private or embarrassing that could be used against you. This includes personal information about past relationships, financial matters, and any other sort of content that should remain between you and close friends.
  • Be mindful of your language. Swearing should never be used when speaking on live TV as it can be perceived as offensive. Always aim for professional language that is respectful of your viewers.
  • Avoid controversial topics when on air. This includes politics, religion, sensitive topics and anything else that could be deemed offensive or distasteful to the viewers.
